PH levels in water

Posted by rober49 (My Page) on

an often discussed topic at my local cactus society meetings is the pH levels in local water supplies. cacti & succulents prefer a 5.5-6.5 pH level. some local supplies, mine included are extremely high. mine tests out at over 9. I've started to lower it by adding vinegar to my watering can. since I've started adding the vinegar there appears to also be an improvement in my brug cuttings. have there been any studies concerning pH levels & brugs?

How much vinegar do you add to a one gallon watering can full of water?
I don't know the pH level of my tap water. But I want to give my Brug the best there is. How much acidity can my brugs tolerate, and/or what do they prefer?
Thank you.
Ingrid.

i do not know what brugs like. i'm asking too. it may be coincidental but they seem to like the same pH levels as cacti. we went to a pet shop & bought a pH test kit. my water is at 9.5. cacti & most succulents like 6.5. i add 6 tablespoons per gallon to get my water to 6.5.
