O/T Camellias are gettin' goin'

I don't mind the Fall and early winter as much as I used to since I've planted camellias.

Here are a few that are going gangbusters.

Lost the tag on this one. Home Depot special. Still a small plant.

Dave they are beautiful. I can't grow a camellia to save my life. It's a death sentence for a camellia in my yard. I've probably wasted close to $1000 over the years on camellias. Growing up we had the most wonderful camellias in the yard and I only grew up about 15 miles from where I am now.

Dave I mis-read the heading of your post. I thought it meant: Camellias are getting---going out the door and dying down for the winter. - OH well, leave it to me!
They are superb looking, congratulations! Good job.

Dave I am happy they are making your garden and colder month brighter.
I am with Karyn....Out of the 3 I bought...there is ONE barely hanging in there.

They do not like me.

They look great Dave. I miss the giant ones in Louisiana. They need acid soil. Lucy you and I are doomed to growing them in pots, lol. I still have one I need to send Daniella.

Karyn,

Spend that money building up the soil! You can do it! What happens to your plants? Put them on the North and West sides, or under some trees (except Maples -- they are notorious for aggressive roots). Also, get the super hardy Ackerman hybrids.

Dave I've tried everything. They just see me and die! lol

Karyn,

One of these days when I have some TIME (yeah, right!), I'll make it my goal to help you get some camellias going! You have to plant in Spring, so they have a season to adjust. Work some peat into the soil. You have to plant hardy varieties, and then mulch and water. Put plastic protection around stems for voles. Spray or netting to keep deer off. Heck, have your kid pee on it. LOL!

They can water it at the same time, lol. I am going to plant one of mine and try it. The hydrangeas loved the pots but did horrible in the ground. I'll have to add a lot of peat when I plant it.

Dave, roflmao. The peeing only works for so long. When Son lived here last summer...he went and peed in certain places that I was afraid the deer would come in.

I told him he needs to change his diet, so the pee starts smelling different roflmao

I am not sure if I want to kill another one :-(

Your camellia are lovely Dave!

I fell in love with them when I moved south and we planted two as soon as we bought our house (have to add more soon) I admit I was a little sad the first year, they seemed to be growing so slow! But the flowers are worth it! In this area the camellias really are the star of the winter and spring garden, there are many huge old trees in every colour and flower form! I want them all!

Do you know if they can be grown from cuttings? I have had good results from Gardenia and roses, but have never really tried other plants.

Now if I could get rhodies to grow in my yard......

Have a wonderful day!

Frances
