I know how much you Love Santa Rosa, it has Beautiful Blooms, what's not too Love about it, it's amazing how tall it gets, mine was taller than Naughty Nick, I didn't think any of them got taller than NN,I feel for you dragging them in & out, we do Love our Blooms don't we?

Don't you hate the way the foliage looks when it warms up after a night with frost. It reminds me of steamed spinach. At least the buds and seed pods are more resilient.

My Santa Rosa grew to 12' this year from a cutting received last fall. Like most of my brugs it took 'forever' to get any blossoms and only got 3 on SR before having to cut it back...........no way to get up that high to get a sniff - LOL.
I wish I'd thought to cut back the top and root the upper 4-5' then maybe I might have hopes of seeing the bloom closer and getting a sniff....do you think that might work next year?

What have you got to lose? The silly thing deserves whatever treatment it gets IMHO if it won't bloom when you want it to! Just out of curiosity, what kind of exposure did it have, Will?

It was on the north side of my garage (at the NW corner) so the hight might have been a factor of it 'reaching' for the sun. I'll put it in the middle of a 7 half-barrel row next year and see how tall it gets. If it gets that tall again I think I will try cutting off the top and rooting that as (for me anyhow) if its that high and I can't see the flowers up close or get a sniff its not worth the effort.
