If it gets that cold where you are at, you need to protect the plant by bringing it indoors or covering it someway so that it won't freeze. If the roots freeze, then it's a goner, but looks like you can still save it. When the weather warms up again, it will start getting new leaves.

I have brugs in 14 gal. containers and they overwintered outside . We had an unusually cold winter in this part of N. C. but they all survived , as did the ones planted in the ground . I did cut them back to a few inches above ground . Your plant should be fine

Sorry to hear of your Mom's passing....I hope it does well for you. As far as I can tell, the stems look ok, they are not black. Especially protect the roots from freezing, and if you don't want to loose the trunk and braches, protect the whole plant.

Does the big pot you have it in have drainage holes? I hope you can save it. I used to have some sentimental plants, so I understand the importance of it.
