Brugmansia just Bloomed! In November. In Zone 6

So, my Mom sent me pictures of her Brugmansia, which just bloomed for the first time.

This is...odd. We're in Zone 6.

Mom bought it early Spring and kept it outside in a spot with plenty of sun, but unfortunately also plenty of wind, snails and Japanese beetles. It didn't bloom all Summer. We moved it inside into an unheated sunroom in September, and I repotted and fertilized it a little. It grew lots of foliage and just bloomed.

My questions are:
1.) What were we doing wrong that kept it from blooming outside? Was it getting too much sun, is it blooming now because it's now in a bigger pot, or did it just mature?
2.) Is this really good for it?
3.) What type of Brugmansia is it?
