Transplanting Angel Trumpet

I want to transplant a 3 yr old 5 ft angel trumpet that is growing in the ground at another location than my home. I want to put it in a pot for the winter in the green house. In the spring I want to put it in a larger pot to keep. It is still blooming. But I'm afraid that we will have a frost in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Should I cut it back and pot it now? Do I need to let frost kill the growth and wait until next spring to transplant? Thanks.

Why not take a cutting, grow it on in water, and go from there in the Spring? You can start it early in your Greenhouse! I THINK you could cut it back now, transplant it now into a large pot, and grow it on in your greenhouse, but I still would take a cutting and grow it on, as above, as a backup!
If you have never dug one up you are going to be very surprised at the largeness of the root system! Good Luck!

Don't do what I just did- I tripped with the huge plant in hand, caught my balance against the railing of the patio and knocked a good 2/3s off a perfectly happy plant. Now it looks like a long skinny spike.

Just pot it up the way it is- that's what I did to save a huge green seedpod- I dug it up & put it in a joint compound bucket with holes in the bottom. the plant is absolutely fine, still blooming its head off like nothing ever changed! - it never missed a beat- I put it in a basement for a week til our first frost was past & brought it outside again- it will go back down in my basement under lights for the winter- it will bloom quicker than if I cut it all the way down. good luck!

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I will use them all except falling off the patio.
