On a bit of a different topic I recently saw another PBS show produced by the BBC about pedigree dogs. It was so disturbing. It's the reason that I'll never again own a purebred dog.

Wow, Karyn I just watched about pedigree dogs! It is long program, but oh so informative. I am going to send it on to lots of people. I hope my GS's black lab will be spared (bought it for him two years ago) and their shih tzu (which I also bought).

I grew up with German Shepards and they are my favorite dog but when I was looking for a dog this time I only wanted a mix because of genetic problems, especially hip problems and gastric volvulus. When I was a kid the breed was much healthier. I got a Lhasa Apso when I was 16 and even back then (I'm 46 now) that poor dog had so many problems, allergies, skin conditions and thyroid conditions due to inbreeding and I got her from a reputible breeder. The breeder offered to take her back but she would have just put her down. My parents fell in love with that dog and I didn't take her back after I graduated from college. She died from heart disease when she was 11 and her life span should have been much longer.
