A large number of Monarchs were still at El Rosario sanctuary as of last Thursday. They were high up in the park, at least as high as last year. It was a warm, sunny day, and most of the butterflies were flying, nectaring, basking or ... doing what comes naturally.

We found a secluded meadow on a side trail and my husband lay down and napped while I chased butterflies with the camera. One Monarch perched on his hand while he slept.

We didn't see any heavy clusters on trees until we were near the top of the trail.

The trail ended this year with a spectacular sight, thousands of Monarchs puddling in a damp stream bed, a living river of butterflies.

And always, the promise of more Monarchs in our gardens this summer ...

I shot a number of video clips in addition to the still photos, and we are working on combining them into a short movie. I'll post a link when it's ready -- should be only a day or two.
