Spring is back

And so are the butterflies. Tuesday was the first warm day after three nights of freezing temperatures, and it was the first day I've seen multiple species of butterflies in my yard. The freeze killed some things, but it did not seem to have hurt the clover, and that was the big attraction today. Here's the list:

Gorgeous, especially the eastern tailed blue - I can never catch them still enough to make a picture!
I believe the butterfly in the clover is a male spicebush swallowtail.

Wonderful pictures! That's the best picture I've ever seen of a Horace's duskywing. Maybe it will help me tell the difference between it and a Juvenal's duskywing. I know the Juvenal's is larger and is supposed to have some gray,BUT I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FIELD.

Mike, your comments sent me back to the books to make sure I had the ID right on the duskywing. The books weren't all that helpful, but the Massachusetts NABA chapter has a great side-by-side comparison feature that shows the differences pretty well.

When I compared those pictures with mine -- including others from the same set, I discovered that both species may have been present in the yard at the same time. I had assumed that I only had Horace's, so I didn't even look it up when I posted the original pics. I still think the first picture is of a Horace's Duskywing, but I now believe that this picture, shot the same afternoon, is a Juvenal's Duskywing:
