Butterfly Garden

What type of Butterfly is this?

Hi all,

Our garden was graced by this beautiful Butterfly last week and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind it is?

I think it is either a Desert Black Swallowtail (Papolio polyxenes coloro) or an Anise Swallowtail. It looks exactly like the one in my book "An Introduction to Southern California Butterflies" idenitfied as a Desert Black- but I am not sure how often those would be found in your area.

Thank you jillberto - from pictures through Google it looks a lot like the Anise Swallowtail - though some pictures of the Desert Black also look like my guy - either way I'm just thrilled that he/she seems to like my garden. It was a very windy day and I took about 40 pictures and came up with some really nice pictures that I'm happy with :o) - I'm a rose gardener at heart, but try to plant flowers for the butterfly's and hummingbirds that visit my garden too.
