What's Going On?

These look like two different kinds of butterflies to me. Is this an unusual scene? Looks like they are clinging to one another - I am pretty new to butterfly habits, so I'm learning too. Thanks,

Suz

You are amazingly lucky -- and observant. What's going on is Tiger Swallowtail procreation.

The male Tigers have the distinctive yellow and black stripes, while the females often are black with iridescent blue markings and some orange spots on the undersides of the hindwings. When the light catches her just right, you can see faint tiger stripes on the blackform female. Some females are yellow with black stripes, like the males, but they also have the blue patches on the hindwings that distinguish them from the males. I've seen lots of the blackform females, but only one of the yellow ones. The link shows pictures of females of both colors.

I hope you get lots and lots of Tiger babies.
