Don't know what he is, but what a beauty!

It looks like an aberrant fritillary. I'm not sure which one as I'd need to compare wing patterns with all the different species and I'd need to know the size of the BF. I thought at first it was a Great Spangled. You might want to look at Fritillary pictures and see which one comes closest. The white is normally orange on frits.

I've had a Red Banded Hairstreak that didn't have any red on it. The red was replaced with white.

Looks like a dark female Leto Fritillary (Speyeria leto) which is often considered to be a sub species of the Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele).

That's a BF I've never heard of. It's a beauty, though. I'm glad you IDed it, Cat. Guess I was barking up the right tree, wrong branch! I'll definitely file this bug away.

It sure is a pretty butterfly - wish we got those down here.

Thank you for the identification. I went to that link above, and the pattern was very similar, though the color was different. I'd never seen a visitor like that before. The size of it was about similar to the swallowtails we see in the summer, defintely bigger than the painted Lady which we see the most.
