black caterpillar infestation on my coneflowers!!!!!

Hello! Forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but I was directed by some members in the pest forum to check here with the experts...Found these lil fellers on a couple of my echinacea plants? These are probably very common but I have never seen them. Especially in such large numbers. Any ideas???? There are so many of them!!! They have almost completely destroyed one plant and are well on their way w/ this one.

Could it be gypsy moth caterpillars?

I still get the creeps thinking about the infestation we had many years ago when we lived in Pennsylvania. DH and I spent weeks flicking thousands of them into buckets full of soapy water.
