Buckeyes got sprayed,and Dill plus Parsley(store)...

Caused problems although Dill was labeled organic.I had fed the foliage
Before postings warning abt the insecticides came up.I had my own Dill
And Fennel(lots of fennel)early Spring,and collected catepillars as soon
As they shed the bird-dropping phase because first stripes is when the cats
Start getting picked up here.I had them all in large screen-top aquariums
Left over from when I kept snakes and mouse dorms.There was no over-crowding,there was filtered sun,shade.They were outside in a open potting
Shed.This first group emerged and was released;I think I lost one.
My problems started when I had to buy from the markets abt mid-summer
When the cats were almost ready and the Butterfly Garden was stripped.
The cats accepted the bought foliage and gained size then went to chrysalis
Everything seemed normal.I expected them to emerge in the Fall as usual
To do the Fall brood.They never did.I still have them in the pool shed in
Case they held over(which I don't expect). I think they died in the chrysalis
Stage.

Black Swallowtails overwinter in their chrysalis. I would just keep the ones you have in a protected spot outdoors. When the weather gets warm in spring, they should emerge, mate, and lay more eggs on your fennel, dill and parsley. I would just make sure you've got enough seeds planted so you don't run out again. It appears everything is proceeding perfectly normally.

Afraid they are dead.Down here in the deep South our BST will triple brood.
This would(I suppose)require our state's usual early Spring warm and long
Hot Summers with Fall temperatures allowing that third brood to reach pupa
Stage to happen.The brood in question should have emerged in 10-20 days.
Dill grows here but not well,but Fennel will overwinter.I see Zebras,Tiger
swallowtails and even BST in February flying abt outside.I may have had
Eggs on the Fennel early in April.Anyway,I just can not trust the grocery
Stores to provide safe greens when the garden is stripped,and I may have
To just leave the cats on the plants???

I have a ton of fennel seeds. If you want to try to plant something more to feed your cats, I could send you some. My sister has it growing in her yard and it reseeded like crazy. So, she collected all the seed she could to keep it from dropping on the ground and growing even more. If you'd like some, send me an email.
