milkweed seed stratification

Never planted milkweed before. Work on a volunteer veg garden, and we're thinking of adding a monarch waystation area. Large open field (playground) with our existing veg beds at one end (no chemicals). Woods on 2 sides. Have a fair amount of milkweed seed (100's of seeds) of varieties native to NC. None of us ever stratified anything. Read a suggestion to plant/sow into ground in fall & they will know when to come up. Seems easier than refrigerator.. Is it too late? Last frost is early April. Planning on the two sides near the woods, marked so areas not mowed. Will mix in native nectar plants. Not planning beds, but looking natural. Any conflict that our field is a magnet for bluebirds?
