Watching that toy gave me the overwhelming urge to open the jar and release that butterfly to freedom! Which is one of my favorite moments in the whole butterfly rearing process. :)

The jar has taken up residence on our kitchen table. Whatever it uses for a sensor is pretty sensitive because many times our footsteps are enough to get it going. You hear it moving and look over to see the butterfly fluttering. I'm still really enjoying it.

Had a friend and her three kids over on Saturday. I have helped them raise a few moths (plus the boy is the one who found the female poly that is the beginning of my poly bloodline) so they are very interested in whatever I have. My son immediately grabbed the jar to show them our "Monarch." The mother already new about the "butterfly" but the three kids were taken in for a while. The 9 year-old thought the monarch looked smaller than usual. The 12 year-old eventually figured out the body was not normal. They had fun playing with it the rest of the night.

I have a funny story about this product. Our local Walmart had a huge display of them at the entrance around Mother's Day last year. As my son and I walked into the store, there was a blonde lady who was intently studying one of the jars with the fake butterfly flitting wildly about inside. She finally turned to the little Walmart greeter, and with a seriously horrified look on her face, she asked, "Is that butterfly real?" We have had lots of good laughs over that one.
