Can I trim my tulip poplar tree?

About 4 years ago I rescued a small tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) from a construction site to attract ETS. When I rescued the tree it stood about 3 ft tall. I thought tulip poplars took years to grow, but boy was I wrong. My tree now stands 12 ft and she/he is gorgeous. However, I would like to trim it. By trimming I mean reduce the tree's size to 6ft. Is it possible to do this? Can I make the tree more bushy in a sense?
