He's a male, Angie, and quite the beauty! Spicebush swallowtails take longer than other butterflies to emerge from winter - I just released my last one about a week ago.

My Spicebush tree just finished blooming. The leaves are starting to come out.

Thanks Sherry for the gender ID, and thanks runmede for the link. I am going to save that one. I was wondering about when they would ever finally eclose. I had 60 overwintered Black Swallowtail chrysalides, and all of them are long eclosed and gone now. :)
My Spicebush is all leafed out now. I checked my journal from last year, and I had Spicebush cats 3 weeks from now in 2013. Of course, I may not have even one this year. You just never know with the butterflies. Every year is different with each species. I had a fence load of Passionvine last year and not even one butterfly caterpillar found on it.

Last year the late frost nipped many plants and butterflies. A friend lost her Pipevine ST colony. Pipevine and Zebra STs form colonies near host plants.
