I know I should know this, but it escapes me and I can't find it in my books.

It's a question mark, Catherine. I love how they perch upside down on tree trunks - red admirals do the same.

Thanks Sherry! I guess I'm used to seeing them with their wings closed and you can see the mark.
I learn things........but I forget them!
I'm glad I didn't rotate the picture.......thinking it was upside down! haha

So beautiful! I love those smoky lower wings! We have been having those around our yard too. Lots of seedling elms in the area.
