Where to get a hackberry tree

Where can I get a small hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) tree, or even seeds?

Will it grow as understory to pine trees? The pine trees aren't thick, so it should still get plenty of sun.

Thanks!
Leslie

Leslie,

Let me check, but I'm pretty sure I have quite a few seedlings here. Shouldn't be any problem getting you fixed up with a couple If I still have them.

It's not really an understory tree, but you are a better judge of the sun available there.

A hackberry is not an understory tree. I have climbed hackberry trees in excess of 80ft tall. The tree may grow with an interestig form due to phototropism but it will eventually overtake the area and become an eyesore. Is it the leaf size or shape that you are looking for? What characteristic of the tree has made you want it for the spot that you have? There may be a better choice for you.

I'm sure she wanted it for a host plant for butterflies. It is host to several species.

You can try a dwarf hackberry tree, Celtis tenufolia. If you find one, let me know where. I have a regular one, Celtis occidentalis, which I love. However, it is HUGE. It is over 60 feet tall and loves to drop branches. It must be pruned correctly when young or it does that. I love hackberry butterflies. They are so much fun. I have lots of them and question marks too. The last NABA gardening magazine had an article about using hackberries. I would love to try the tenufolia. I guess it is endangered the farther north you go too.
