I saw my first butterfly of the season today and couldn't be happier!!!! I am a mail carrier and saw either a comma or question mark today while on my route feeding on a violet. I was unable to tell which one for sure at a glance, but was surley surprised! Last year the first sighting was of a mourning cloak. Now if I could just corral them into my yard...

I saw my first Ohio moth of the year tonight. My wife and I were in our bedroom. My wife was just getting in the bed when she spotted something on a wall and asked me what it was. I walked over and found a female polyphemus. Always funny when these caterpillar escapees show up as moths at unexpected times and places.

Congrats on the Ohio butterfly and moth!
Question marks are one of the first butterflies I see in spring each year down here - I think they overwinter as adults.
And polyphemus moths are SO gorgeous! 'Just hope your gal draws in a male pal, KC! :)

That's great news honeybee! We should start seeing some in the coming weeks. I just looked at my file I keep and last year I had a Cabbage White on April 1 (they're usually the first ones I see), an Eastern Tailed Blue on April 2, and an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on April 9. Then it wasn't until May 1 when I saw another one (couldn't ID, as it was too far away). The butterflies didn't come here regularly until the middle of May. They'll be here before you know it.

    Sherry,

I do have her outside on the outside chance (pun intended) that some wild male has decided to eclose 3 weeks earlier than usual. So far, no one has showed but that is what I expected. Supposed to be 80 here tomorrow which is not the norm but I still don't expect any males this early.

kcclark...your "sighting" was much more impressive than mine! :) I was outside in the 80 degree weather today getting my koi pond ready for the season and a cabbage white flew overhead a couple of times. I also spotted what I think to have been a dragonfly pass quickly through the yard. Yeah!!!!

I saw my first gulf frit yesterday and released my third anise swallowtail yesterday as well. I was so excited because some years I don't see any gulf frits at all and last year I was thrilled when in July I saw a female gulf frit laying eggs on my passionvine, or at least what was left of it because I had just cut it severely back because it was taking over some pipe vine and I hadn't seen any gulf frits to speak of in a couple of years. In fact, I had just cut it back again earlier this week since I never expected to see one for a long while. When will I learn to be a bit more patient?

    But things look promising. Murray

Terrific news honeybee! It's so exciting to begin to see them again. I am in NW GA, and I am regularly seeing large Tigers come through now. I have had some overwintering Black Swallowtails to eclose in my garage, and I have officially seen 3 Monarchs come through my yard now!!~~Angie
