Looks a lot like the caterpillar of the Large Yellow Underwing moth, Noctua pronuba.

The adult moth has brown forewings and bright yellow or orange hindwings, flies in summer.

Originally from Europe, first sighted in BC in 2002. They have become very common.

It loves to eat most any leafy herb. I would recommend you try to eliminate as many as you can, as a couple of dozen of these will chew down square yards of garden plants. Best time for hunting is at night with a flashlight. After our cover crop and rhubarb kept disappearing in recent years, I nabbed about 100 of these, and this year's plants are doing well again.

Interesting...I usually poke at all the moths that congregate under our outdoor lights, but I don't think I've seen many Yellow Underwing Moth before. I do find items resembling their chrysalises in/on the soil from time to time though.

Not all moths are attracted to lights. I have seen many dozens of the Lesser Yellow Underwing moth (a similar species to yours) during the day, but not around the utility light at night. The moths are mostly inside the garage trying to get out, or flush out of shrubbery when water is sprayed on the bushes daytime.

That's a most interesting looking caterpillar, one I've never seen before. It looks like lattice work! :)
