Almost 200 cecropias babies were born this morning ! I was thinking about raising them in 2 or 3 groups with different food source to make sure i have enough. Any suggestions on which tree I should use ?
Where did you find them, or did you purchase them? some of their host plants include Box Elder, Sugar Maple, Plums, Cherries, Apples, Dogwood, Birch, Alder and Willow.
I have selected plum, birch and pear. It has been raining so much here in the South that we have an abundence of nice leaves on trees. I am so used to tend to many monarchs cats this time of the year but despite the tall milkweed, no sign of these beauties. i found the cecropia moth at a gas station. i have found many large moths there in the past. I am currently raising lunas and polyphemus as well. it is going to be a busy summer ! :) This is my first time with the cecropias ! Wish me luck
I raised Cecropias on Buttonbush--that's where I found the caterpillars. You will have quite a time feeding all of the cats. You may want to let some of them return to the wild. I have raised about 20, and that kept me so busy keeping them in food. When they start getting large, they have huge appetites. I shared some of my caterpillars with a nature center, and other people that I knew that could provide food.
