Black Swallowtail osmeterium

Between my six-year old niece and I, we have 11 Black Swallowtail cats either in chrysalis or in their fifth instar stage right now. Last night, I had something unusual happen. One was on a stick and resting, but had not started making its girdle. I walked up to check on the others and it put out its osmeterium. Another one, on the parsley plant, did the same thing. I noticed that neither has been able to bring the osmeterium back in. This morning, the one on the stick seems to be trying to spin its girdle but not being successful. The other one still has its osmeterium out and is still slowly moving around on the parsley. Has anyone else had this happen? Today, I get to take some BST eggs I have on a rue plant to my niece and she will get to watch the entire process. She is sooo excited about this and I am enjoying sharing it with her.
