First Monarch of the Season

My wife and I were on a short trip to Door County in Wisconsin, and also visited Manitowoc, where we saw our first Monarch butterfly of the season. We live in the Twin Cities in MN, and it is very unusual to see any monarchs here before about the first of June, so we were very surprised to see this one, at about the same latitude, on a cool, rainy day.

Good luck to all of the butterflies!

Monarchs have been reported being sighted much earlier everywhere, I have seen several now and I have about 30 or so eggs so far, with some of them hatched already. I got have some Monarchs eclose by the end of May!

RE: First Monarch of the Season

Just today I found a female monarch exploring the back yard in St. Paul. Didn't get a picture, but she was very dark, almost as dark as a Queen - don't know if there's any significance to that. I have some swamp milkweed coming up next to the garage, but I couldn't hang around to see if she found it. I'll check for eggs later.
