Just put them in a safe place, and they'll likely emerge/eclose just as well as if they were attached, at least that's the way it's happened when mine didn't properly attach. Maybe you forgot to tell them to get a grip! :)

Do they still have the silky threads attached? I have used masking tape to tape the silk to a secure surface. Last fall I moved a few of the chrysalises of spicebush swallowtails that had pupated on the side or top of the aquarium tank, to the sticks where the other cats had pupated. I tried to mimic the position they naturally hang in. Then, overwintered them on the sticks inside a mesh sleeve on the outside of the house.

They don't need to be attached to emerge. But, I do make sure that they are in a net container so that they can climb up to inflate their wings.

Lila, make one! Take a small tomato cage and trim off the spikes to about 4 inches. Bend the spikey ends in to the center. Buy a package (2) of paint strainers, I think they're the 5 gallon size at Lowe's for just a little over $2. There's only one size that has 2 in the package. Put a paint strainer over the tomato cage, and Voila! you have a raising container. Use a cheap paper plate for food. The butterflies pupate on the wires--works great and the strainers can be washed and sanitized. All for under $5.00!! I've got about 6 that I use.

Or, throw your fat cats in a paper sack. I used a lunch sack for up to 4 caterpillars. They pupate on the sides of the sack. When they eclose, you hear them moving on the sack surface! I'm all about cheap and resourceful.
