New butterfly for my yard

Liz

This afternoon a mourning cloak butterfly sailed past me. I think I have seen them before, but I never noticed one in my yard. Maybe it is because of all the hackberries that volunteered on the property. I understand they are a host plant for this butterfly, as well as a number of others.

Also saw my first tiger swallowtail of the season today. A good day in butterfly land!

Our summer resident birds have arrived too. I now hear the house wren gurgling away every day, and the chipping sparrows are trilling. Catbird has also made an appearance. Unfortunately I missed it, but my husband spotted an oriole in one of our trees. I do love the spring!
