Butterfly weed can be safely divided and replanted when it has its first set of true leaves into individual pots to grow out further.
Make sure that each plant has an intact taproot when planting, as Butterfly Weed shocks easily when transplanting. Water in well and place in shade for a day or so until each plant recovers from the trauma of transplanting. Then slowly move to sunny location. When plants outgrow pots, they can safely be transplanted into the ground.
