I am on the I-5 half way between Eugene and Medford. I have seen one for a
few days. The first I have seen for years. Today I found a fuzzy white cocoon attached to the underside of the hand railing on the deck. It looks to be about 1/1/2 inches long. Would that be a Swallowtail cocoon? I have been reading but never posted so was kind of excited to see her/him.

I haven't seen a single black swallowtail yet. I'm in New Jersey. Last year I definitely had them by early July. I have started to see a few tiger swallowtails. They are very abundant around here, due to the large number of tulip trees we have.

Only moths spin cocoons. Butterflies have chrysalids without cocoons, anchored by silk buttons. Swallowtails will attach themselves to a surface using a silken girdle that goes around their midsection along with a silk button anchor.

I'm pretty far from you but I have many cats and many chrysalis'. I've had six eclose so far. I'm running out of food and still have some tiny ones to rear.

Plant some dill, carrots or parsley. You will see them.

Fennel is a great food source and gets huge. You'll get the most bang for your buck with Florence and Bronze Fennel.
