Monarch question

So I'm new to all this, and have started with 7 milkweed plants that get munched away and have lots of caterpillars already plus monarchs grazing my yard all day! I love it! Funny they don't go for any of the plants they are supposed to....Zinnias, coneflowers, lantana, butterfly bush, pentas...Nope...just the milkweed and occasionally a rose or fringe flower! Anyway last night I saw a Monarch lying on the soil by one of the milkweed and thought it was dead! But Its gone this morning...would a new monarch fall to the ground and just lay there? Or could I have killed it by spraying a soap solution on the aphids? But its gone! Help!
