I'm a Monarch Cat Mom!!

| I have been so concerned that I've not seen any butterflies in my garden this year. Well today I did my morning check for eggs, and I have baby cats!!! I'm so excited! I can't believe I missed the eggs though. Old eyes I guess :)
I haven't taken a count yet, there are at least two. I'm preparing their cage and will report back with the total.
(and I am trying to control myself to NOT go down to the common ground in my neighborhood, where there is a patch of milkweed that is probably full of babies too!) |

| Definitely addicted! This will be my 4th year for BSTs and my second for Monarchs. I only came up with 3 babies, but the sun was really bright so I might have missed some, I'll check again later. The 3 that I do have seem happy in their new home :) |

Yes it is! Final count: 3 cats and 4 eggs :) Tell me again, how long until they pupate?.... |
RE: I'm a Monarch Cat Mom!!

| Usually from egg hatching to pupating is 10 days. |

| I'm so jealous! I just got my three milkweeds planted two weeks ago but I'm checking them every day since they've really grown in that time. I can't wait to be a monarch mom too! I've got more Gulf Frits than I know what to do with but I especially want to help the monarchs given their looming future. |

| If you plant it, they will come . . . |

| Congrats! I've been impatiently awaiting the arrival of the Monarchs, and finally saw my first last week. Today I had 2 ladies hitting the milkweeds and one of them left me a load of eggs. They sure took their sweet time this year... |

| How exciting! I'm hoping to be a Monarch mom for the 2nd year, and hoping to raise some BST's for the 1st year. I have been checking the Asclepias and Bronze fennel for eggs - but nothing yet. It was an unusually wet and cool June, so it's not surprising. A lot of my Asclepias is taking a beating in this weather - the A. incarnata (swamp milkweed) is in horrible shape, suffering from both wilt and slugs. Several other species are in rough shape too. Most of the tender young plants are being eaten into sticks by slugs. But I should be able to scrounge enough to feed a few cats. :) Last year there were over a dozen BST cats on the Bronze fennel and 1 on the dill - hoping they will return this year. |

| The cats are now 1" long and munching away. Unfortunately, I think the eggs are all dead :( None have hatched, and they look a little wrong. They darkened, and are thin, not round. Very odd. I have not seen any BSTs at all. I am hoping they are just late and will still show up. They are my favorites. |

| Normally the eggs will darken a little. If the eggs hatch they may be Queens which are very similar to Monarchs but are slightly different (including the eggs). I have Queens, Soldiers and monarchs. They all love milkweed. If you need any tips, let me know. Good luck!!!! Congrats!! It is very satisfying to know you contribute to the beauty of our world, isn't it!?!? |
