Butterfly Garden

BSTs have a curled wing

I have a large patch of sweet fennel and had a bumper crop of caterpillars two weeks ago. Since I was going on vacation I let them stay on the fennel and didn't bring them inside. I have noticed something odd about some of them - two of the six newly emerged BSTs this morning had the same defect-the left hand bottom wing never unfurled and so therefore the butterflies couldn't fly away. What causes the wings to become disfigured like that? Parasites?

That is strange. I've never seen anything like that, but I'd be guessing the same as you and do the hard thing and euthanize the butterflies and probably remove the crop. Could be some kind of disease too.
