Eupatorium havanense - White Mistflower

Does anyone know where to buy this plant in southern Mississippi?

I just recently found this forum by accident. I've been lurking for several days and have already learned so much.

Any help for a new BF gardener will be greatly appreciated.

Linda

Linda, I doubt seriously that you'll find this plant for sale anywhere in the state. Walmart and Lowe's don't ordinarily carry it - I think it may be too "weedy" for them.
I've only found one nursery - a mail-order nursery - that carries it, and I may order it eventually. If I do, I plan to plant it up by the main road where the soil is poor and dry - this plant is native to hot, dry areas of Texas and Mexico. If this weather keeps up, we may be in that category here in south MS! Anyway, if I do and I get seeds, I'll offer them to posters on this forum.

I'll be driving through Houston next week, and there is a nursery there that specializes in Texas native and naturalized plants. Butterfly plants is one of their specialties. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to drop in and see if they have any E. havanense. But I'm a newbie to gardening and have never harvested seeds, so someone will have to walk me through the process.

I do have a blue mistflower but haven't seen too many butterflies attracted to it. The only reason I know about the white version is because I saw it at Home Depot Garden Club's Q&A. And wouldn't you know it, HD doesn't carry it. But anyway that made me google the plant, and I saw where someone here had picked it as his/her plant of the year, I think back in '07. That's how I discovered this site.

BTW, Sherry, I live north of Ocean Springs, north of the interstate, and we finally got some good rain yesterday, a real gully washer. Did you get any of that? And it was a little cooler this morning. I usually limit my time outside to about 30 minutes' worth of weeding and whatever before 8 a.m., but this morning I was able to stay outside and plant about a dozen pentas.

Question: This is my first year to do any gardening (yes, I'm a late bloomer), so I tho't I'd try a BF garden. A friend told me to be sure to have host plants nearby (milkweed for monarchs), so I was wondering how close to the nectar plants should a host plant be?

Anywhere in the general vicinity will do, Linda. I have a butterfly garden - with a 6' fence around it to keep out critters - with lots of both host and nectar plants in it, but I've also got both types planted all around my house, plus there are a lot of host plants in my 5 1/2 acres of woods.
I missed the rain that went through some of this area yesterday. I got a good bit of rain earlier in the month that the Coast didn't get though, plus the more inland areas have gotten more rain all this year than the Coast - too much, actually in May. But this heat with the dry weather is awful!! I live just north of Wiggins, in the country, almost exactly half way between Hattiesburg and Gulfport. My husband and I are both originally from Hattiesburg, but we lived in Gulfport for 30 years.
There are many host plants you can plant, depending on the amount of space you've got, with milkweed being just one of them. Check out the FAQ for a good long list.

Wow, what a comprehensive list. I've printed it out for future reference. And I just thought I was doing well with rue, fennel, dill, cottonwood and hackberry.

Linda,

Don't give up on the blue mistflower: I visited The Wildseed Farms in Frederecksburg last year and the queen butterflies were all over the blue mistflower! Hundreds of them. The Wildseed Farm grows plants for the seeds and they had a patch of this and there must have been 300+ Queens attracted to it. I have to admit, I have never had that kind of luck with it, even bought one from their nursery and still didn't have many takers. Figured it must be the competition of the other nectar faves I have in the yard. Good luck finding the white. Were you referring to Joshuas Native Plants or another nursery?

Mechelle,

No, Buchanan's in the Heights. I've visited the Wildseed Farm and its butterfly meadow twice. Impressive place. But I don't think I ever saw any seeds for the blue mistflower. I got my one mistflower plant at Natural Gardener in Austin. I'm not going to throw it out - I just wish I saw more butterflies around it.

Mechelle,

Where is Joshua's? Maybe I can swing by there also?
