| It took me a while to see what you meant by 'heart-shaped bottom' but I think I now get it. The butterfly in Laura's link is undoubtedly just holding its wings differently. I see this all the time, especially with swallowtails - the way they position their wings makes a difference in their body shape. The heart shape probably happens when the wings are completely extended, and Laura's butterfly's wings weren't. If you have a good field guide, you'll see that great spangled frits in the eastern part of the US look a little bit different than the ones out west, also the great basin individuals look a little different. The only other butterfly that yours could possibly be is an aphrodite fritillary, but the markings on yours look like a GSF to me. Sherry |
