Males usually emerge first so that they can tank up with minerals for the nutritional cocktail that they give the ladies when mating to help with egg laying.

I've seen a few Tigers. I am hoping for more.

I found two red-spotted purple hatchlings yesterday, brought them in to raise, and I found three RSP eggs today. I'll monitor them closely, and when they hatch, I'll bring them in, too.

He sure is a beauty, Sherry! I hope too that he finds a female so you get to raise more. I only ever got one on a poplar tree that I had planted in a pot 3 or 4 years ago, but sadly it ended up dying and I haven't had any of those cats since. I don't patrol all of the poplar trees that are growing around here though. Mostly all of them are so big that I can't reach up to the leaves. You might have mentioned it and I didn't see it but do you find yours on trees in your yard or a tree or trees that you have in pots?

Cathy, I found his egg on the same young wild black cherry tree where I found some red-spotted purples. I definitely think the reason we find so few tiger eggs/caterpillars is that most of them are high up in the trees. I have real big tulip poplars, wild black cherries, and sweetbay magnolias in my woods, and I frequently see tigers flying high up in the canopy. Of course, we can't reach those cats! Occasionally I find some on a young cherry or Ptelea trifoliata or on some lower branches of sweetbay magnolia. The only tulip poplar I've found them on was one I had recently planted, but I'm sure there are many 60' or more high.

They're easy to raise, not eating much for their size. They're slow, like giant swallowtails, don't move much. I hope I can find some more!
