The butterflies(Pals)come out of the mixed(Sweetgum,Bay,Yaupon,Oak,Huckleberry, other)thick leafy understory
Growth that edges the lawn grass which we mow(sort of)that surrounds my
House.Palamedes flying low enough to net just show up in Spring as soon
As the Bull thistles go into bloom. They will go from plant to plant for the
Nectar. They are one of the early large butterflies that I see in early Spring.
I will always put up with Bullthistles in my yard!!!

Loved reading your description of your yard and the Palamedes. I will never see these guys here. But, I'm seeing them vicariously through your description. Thanks!

That's wonderful! I'm glad to hear that palamedes swallowtails are somewhere - they used to be the most common swallowtail here, but I only saw one this spring. I'd LOVE to find some eggs or caterpillars! The host plant is redbay or swampbay/Persea borbonia or P. palustris, so one (or both) of those must be in the mix of trees you mentioned.
