That description fits so many different caterpillars, it's impossible to give you an answer. A picture might help. It's a moth, I just don't know which one.

Caterpillar's appearance usually changes as they mature, early stages can be difficult to identify. Most caterpillars found at random will turn into moths, as they are far more common. So if you want butterflies, pass over any inchworms or loopers you find, caterpillars that make webs, fold leaves, etc.

Certain butterflies are leaf folders, such as Red Admirals and American Ladies. These caterpillars pupate outside their protective nests.
Some Skippers are leaf rollers as well and will pupate inside the rolled leaf. Any caterpillar which spins a cocoon or burrows underground to pupate is a moth.
