Nancy, the females are typically "on a mission" to lay eggs (which is typically done in the AM before it gets too hot) while you're more likely to see males lounging around the garden sipping nectar.

If you diversify your milkweed and plant lots of it, you should attract egg-laying females. Remember though, only about 1% will survive left outdoors. Tony

Thank you for your reply, Tony. Once I see the eggs on my plants, I move the whole plant up to my balcony, where they are protected. That way I get to watch the whole process. But watching them eclose, they were all males. I had about 25 chrysalis' - not even one female. Just seems strange.
