Swallowtails same as Monarchs?

In terms of raising them? I've had great success with the Monarchs in the last two years and so decided to plant some host plants for the Eastern Swallowtail.

Last year I placed some Rue and it is doing OK. This spring I sowed some Bronze Fennel and some Dill. The plants are only 6 inches tall, but there has been a visitor to the gardens in the last week. :O)

Do you basically raise them the same way? Anyone know of any good sites which would show me photos of their cats and crysalis/cocoon? I know most of you have the beautiful blue one. Mine are the yellow with black lines.

Thanks!

Basically, they are raised the same way other than the host plants. I raise black swallowtails, although none have visited this year yet :(

I'll link an album below with photos from my first experience. These days I use a pop up laundry hamper and little vases that I put the cut parsley, rue or dill in. The vases are easy to remove so I can change out the paper toweling in the bottom. The bad part about the pop up hamper is that when they are ready to pupate, you really have to watch them or they will escape. I keep a kitchen towel over the top but they have still gotten out.

In one of the photos on the link you'll see a plastic aquarium. I think that is the ideal enclosure for small scale butterfly raising. They can't escape but get plenty of air from the slots in the lid. I had Monarchs in that one, but I'm going to get one for my Swallowtails too. (if they ever show up!!)

Here is a link that might be useful: clicky

I forgot to add: Swallowtails like sticks to attach to. They will attach anywhere, but I always get a handful of sticks that have fallen from my trees and put in the enclosure when they are close to pupating. They have chosen a stick over other surfaces 95% of the time.

My butterfly website has info on swallowtails. Check 'em out. I have two different ones:

RE: Swallowtails same as Monarchs?

I have just started raising Black Swallowtails and they are loving Florida right now. I have just had 3 hatch into butterflies. I actually got mine from a nursery and the owner allowed me to take some parsley home with the cats on them. My nursery friend told me that some Swallowtail cats also like Passionvine. I have now have 3 passionvines and I have them loaded with Gulf Fritillaries and hopefully the Swallowtails will come back and leave me some babies.

I also raise Monarchs, Soldiers, Queens, Zebras and a few others I am still learning about.

Good luck!!
