I found a pale yellow maggot-like thing on my dill. It doesn't look or act like any cat I've seen. It was moving around a lot, fast. It was not eating the dill.
Please tell me it's not hunting for my BST cats!!!!!!!
Try an internet search for "syrphid fly larva" and see if that matches. These larvae feed on aphids, so they are a good insect to have around. Other names include hover flies and flower flies. -Jmcat
Thank you jmcat! I think that is what it was. I mean, was, because I was too nervous waiting for a response. I went back out and, um, you know. I did see some little white eggs on the tips of the leaves of a couple of plants. Maybe I'll have more maggots.
Do ladybug larvae or aphids or ants hurt the cats?
ladybeetle larva and adults will gladly devour caterpillars when they (the caterpillars) are small. They will even eat the eggs. [They behave as little cannibals, so we shouldn't be too surprised at that.] Some ant species will protect ' their' aphids from anything they perceive as a threat and some even act as predators. I've watched many a mass attack on caterpillars, by ants.
Pictures would really help us ID the little critter you've observed.
I have some info on my butterfly website for you...I'm re-doing my Monarch guide (which actually has info on the Syrphid) but you can check it out as well. www.mymonarchguide.com
