I agree, common milkweed has a very fragrant bloom, and it does seem to be similar to lilac. We also have orange butterfly milkweed, and lots of flowers, but no fragrance that I can detect.

I too, love the smell of common milkweed...I wish it bloomed longer! swamp milkweed has a nice, less intense fragrance too that's more like vanilla.

It smells like heaven!! If only the flowers could be blue-everyone would have to have it. Hooray for the monarchs!

I agree Robin, I had to post this because I keep the cat's cages right next to a window and this morning I kept smelling that scent when the breeze blew and then I went and smelled the flowers... and smiled :)
