Bob, did you get the impression they were reacting to each other or to your close presence?

larry gene, I watched them from my close position as the older of the two Black Swallowtail caterpillars approached for a considerable time before I shot this picture. The actions of the earlier instar are difficult to show with a still shot...when the large cat got to his present position, the small one anchored his feet at the posterior and violently thrashed about with the upper half his body. The larger cat then reversed his approach and made a hasty retreat. The below photo shows him retreating while the younger has relaxed. The smaller one returned to eating the dill blooms and the larger went back in the direction he came.
