Monarchs don't overwinter as eggs or even as chrysalides. There are some butterflies that overwinter as eggs (some types of fritillaries that don't occur here, as I recall) and there are some that overwinter as caterpillars. Red-spotted purples and viceroys overwinter as early instar caterpillars in their small, tight hibernaculum.

Is there a possibility of an old emerged-out chrysalis over-wintering fairly intact and fooling an MG who did not know the lifecycle thoroughly, or do they get pretty beat-up and discolored?
