Blind-Eyed Sphinx Moth

MissSherry

This sphinx moth has been hanging out on the porch today. I didn't know what type it was, so I looked it up on the Moth Photographer's Group site, and it's definitely a blind-eyed sphinx. This guy, I think it's a male, wouldn't open his wings to let me see his "eye" so I'll have to settle for this picture -

My books say their preferred host plant is wild black cherry/Prunus serotina, so you can chalk up another lep to that great tree! No other plant hosts as many butterflies and moths, at least here.

Well, you know what a fan of sphingidae I am, MissSherry! Great find. If they don't open their wings and I really, really want to see them, I might capture them and put them in the fridge for a few minutes. Then, I gingerly open their wings with a toothpick, or one of those gadgets Larry_Gene uses to manipulate the wings, so I can actually view the underwings.

As an adult, this sphinx does not feed. Great find!

    Thanks, Susan!

I tried blowing on him gently, then touched him gently a few times, but he just sat there like a sphinx! :/
I'll have to try the refrigerator or Larry_Gene method next time.
