Butterfly Garden

monarch raising habitats

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so bear with me. I will be having some monarchs hatching out this weekend and want to keep a male and female so they can breed. I have another cage build for this and have plenty of milkweed for any cats, but can anyone give me more information on how to do this successfully?

Hi Kali, Sorry it has taken so long for a reply to your question. I am not an expert, but I would say that you should not plan to breed a male and female from the same brood. There are problems with inbreeding, and there has been some discussion about the subject here recently on this forum. Just release your butterflies and then keep a check on your host plants for any eggs or caterpillars.

i did end up releasing my 7 butterflies and will continue to monitor my plants. Thanks!
