Hi All~

Been enjoying all of your butterfly sagas! I have had many Black Swallowtail cats this year. I didn't sleeve or raise any this year, but I have fennel that's 6 feet tall, that has been a nice place to watch the cats. I've noticed many butterflies the last few days, which makes me hopeful that some of them are "mine"!
Here's two videos from a couple of years back.
The first one is my husband (he would kill me if he knew I posted this), getting "squirted" by a newly emerged butterfly. Is that a defense mechanism? He was pretty surprised!
The second video, is my other butterfly emerging. Too bad the battery ran out, when she was drying her wings. I had 5 successful eclosures, that year.
Love watching the transformation of these amazing creatures!

Nice videos! I enjoyed them. Thanks so much for sharing. The expulsion of the fluids from a newly eclosed butterfly is usual and normal. The fluid is called meconium, which is the same word used for the first poop from a newborn human. Being startled by your husband may have encouraged the squirt at that time, but it was going to happen regardless. Tell him that if he moves really slowly towards the butterfly next time, he may not get sprayed. :o)
