Another beautiful shot! You are very good with your camera! I love the Gulf Fritillaries, and I was blessed to raise and release a lot of them last year. Sherry, please tell me what you saw that made you identify this one as a female?? Was it the duller orange? I have a hard time sexing them. Thanks. :o) Angie
She's tawny orange, Angie, whereas males are brighter orange. When males first emerge, they're a bright orangey red or reddish orange, and, even when they age and fade, they're still pretty bright. Three gulf frits have emerged this morning in their cage on my front porch. They're still hanging, but I can see than one is bigger than the other two, so she's probably a female - females are slightly larger, also.
