No shortage of black swallowtails

Liz

The black swallowtail cats just keep on coming. I have a middling sized cat inside that I've been raising, and I thought I was doing just fine, but when I looked in today I noticed two more miniscule babies. Meanwhile, outside I have another medium-size cat and several more little ones on my fennel plant. The plant is still quite small, and I am a little worried about its viability if all these cats mature. Should I bring them in and try to raise them using store-bought organic parsley? Or should I take my chances on leaving them out, figuring that most of them won't make it? It seems cruel, but they will contribute to the food chain that way. And the plant needs a break.

I wish I could find some monarch cats to raise, to help them out, but New Jersey seems to be a monarch wasteland. At least this part of the state, the central area. There's milkweed around, but no one seems to be eating it, except for some milkweed bugs.
