How long can Diapause last? Records?

Tdogmom - Your webpage on Anise Swallowtails has raised some questions for me.

Does that mean there were caterpillars that stayed in chrysalis form for seven years before they emerged?

Do they somehow know that food is scarce and wait? How could they possible know that! Amazing!

We've had an unusually hot and dry summer two years in a row and you've got me wondering if there are chrysalises that are waiting for better days. I commented in another thread that our normally plentiful Black Swallowtails have not been around this summer. Maybe those are waiting.
