Monarch Butterfly Chrysalis

We are watching the life cycle of the monarch as a children's programming project at our library this summer. One chrysalis became detached from the top of the enclosure, we looked up information about what to do when this happens. We read that we should tie a string to the black "tail" of the chrysalis and rehang it. When we removed the chrysalis from the enclosure it got dropped onto the floor. We then rehung the chrysalis following the directions we had read about. Now, the next day, the chrysalis has begun to turn black. I believe it is too early for it to turn black like they do when the butterfly is about to emerge. Could our Monarch have died from the fall? Has anyone seen this discoloration happen before?
